Surf Life Saving Australia reports that 66% of coastal drownings occur at un-patrolled beaches, while another 25% happen in patrolled locations outside active hours or beyond the supervised flags. Because it is impossible to patrol every stretch of coastline across the country, we thought that the next best thing we could do is let people know what to look out for.
Introducing the Black Flag. It’s a simple play on the iconic red and yellow SLSA flags seen across patrolled Australian beaches and serves as a poignant reminder that highlights and educate on the unseen hazards like rips and strong currents. These flags are low-cost, easy to install, and serve as an accessible educational tool for beachgoers. Beyond their immediate safety role, they are designed to generate launch PR and spark critical national conversations around water safety and drowning statistics.
